Year of the Swan

If you believe the prognostications, then the Brownlow Medal will be making its way to Collingwood tonight, around the neck of midfielder Dane Swan.

The clear $1.80 favourite with TAB Sportsbet, Swan was the leading possession-winner in the AFL this year, which given how the AFL's award for the ‘fairest and best' has morphed into a midfielders' medal, the favouritism is warranted.

Swan was a favourite last year as well but received just 12 votes, which has been translated by some into meaning that he just doesn't attract the eye of the umpires.

But the Pies started poorly last year. This year they won 17 of 22 and Swan was a key factor in all of it, which can only help.

Gary Ablett will run close again. He won it last year with 30 votes and has polled 72 votes in the last three years. The Ablett-Swan quinella is paying $3.00 and looks pretty good value.

Listen to Wayne Carey and Charles Happell preview the 2010 Brownlow medal. Or watch it.

Also look out for how many votes Freo rookie Michael Barlow earned in the 13 games before he broke his leg.

Will Scott Pendlebury take votes off Swan?

Will Brendon Goddard (Wayne Carey's dark horse) surprise everyone? Or will he and Lenny Hayes poll a heap of votes between them, but not enough for the medal?

What about Luke Hodge? The Hawthorn warrior should poll votes in nearly every match that the Hawks won.

Perhaps and most importantly, will the 2010 Brownlow Medal count be remembered as the latest episode of ‘Men Behaving Badly', or will the crackdown in the number of Crown Lagers served to each table during the count make a difference?

All will be revealed tonight, and for those following at home, we quite like this little app from the Herald Sun website, that will help you keep abreast of what might be about to happen.
