Day One of trade week: Much ado about nothing

The first day of the official AFL Trade Week produced about the same as every other first day of every other year.

Nada. Zero. Zip. Nothing but hot air, ambit claims and lots of journos claiming to know a great deal of what's going on when they actually don't have a clue.

Not that we at BPL claim to be any the wiser. We only know what Hutchy/Damian Barrett/Mark Stevens/Adam White/Jason Phelan/Mick Gleeson/Robbo are telling us.

That's not to say it won't heat up in the next few days. And one deal was close to being agreed to, Sydney's Pat Veszpremi to the Western Bulldogs in exchange for Andrejs Everitt.

The Dogs are said to be leading the race for Brisbane's Justin Sherman, which suggests they're keen to offload the compensatory first-round pick they received for the Gold Coast bound Jarrod Harbrow as quickly as they can, rather than save it for one of the uncompromised national drafts down the track.

The biggest name on the table might be Chris Tarrant, who wants to head back to Collingwood after three years with Fremantle. Not sure where he fits into the Magpies other than as a depth player, given the outstanding grand final form of young defenders Ben Reid and Nathan Brown.

At the other end, Chris Dawes and Travis Cloke are the two first-choice key forwards for the Magpies, but maybe Tarrant knows something that we don't and that perhaps Cloke is entertaining an offer from the Gold Coast that is more serious than we have been led to believe.

The Hawks and the Blues are waiting for the Tarrant crumbs should a deal with Collingwood not eventuate. The Blues need him more, but perhaps the Hawks are better placed to do the deal.

Adelaide bears watching. The Crows didn't trade last year and in hindsight that may have sent the wrong message to the playing group. This time, they're into Carlton's Andrew Walker and Sam Jacobs, and Richard Tambling from Richmond. Tambling has two years left on his contract, but the Tigers don't seem to mind losing him. The poor bloke has never lived up to the hype, although it's not his fault he was selected before Lance Franklin in the 2004 draft.

Geelong is also keen on Tambling as it looks for fresh pace and run, with Gary Ablett gone and genuine pace queries over Cameron Ling and Joel Corey.

Collingwood will give Leon Davis a fresh start elsewhere, perhaps in Western Australia or South Australia. Smart move. Players who just miss out on a premiership have currency and certainly, West Coast could do with a spark around goals.

North Melbourne and the Saints didn't have much to say, although David Hale will leave Arden Street for one of Melbourne, Hawthorn or the Gold Coast, while at the rate the Bombers are re-signing their players, they won't have anyone left to trade, save perhaps for Bachar Houli. It seems everyone in the red and black colours wants to be part of the James Hird revolution.
