Tarrant deal done at the death

After the usual flurry of activity in the final hours of trade week, Collingwood managed to score a coup by securing one-time favourite son Chris Tarrant from Fremantle in the 30 minutes before deadline. It was one of 20 trade deals completed during the week.

In shades of Trent Croad's return to Hawthorn from Freo several years ago, Tarrant had said he wanted to leave the WA club and head back to Victoria - and to Collingwood specifically. Both Tarrant and his management had said he would retire if he did not get his way and end up with the Magpies.

In the end, Fremantle agreed to a deal which saw Tarrant and pick No.44 traded to Collingwood in return for the Pies' second- and third-round picks, Nos. 43 and 55.

Often criticised for his casual approach at Collingwood, where many thought he did not make the most of his undoubted talent, Tarrant said he had "plenty of unfinished business" to do back at his original club.

"I feel like I really owe this club,'' Tarrant said at a Magpies' press conference on Monday afternoon. ''I'm more motivated now and a different player.

"I have become much more versatile - and I should thank Fremantle for helping to improve the defensive side of my game - so I can hopefully sneak up forward and kick a few goals now, or stay back and mind the small forwards like (Mark) LeCras and (Steven) Milne, or play on the bigger guys."

The deal came as drama surrounded the future of Pies' premiership centre half-forward Travis Cloke. Cloke's manager, and father, David spoke to several media outlets around noon, saying a new deal with Collingwood seemed unlikely because the Pies were holding out on their demands. This included a two-year deal for Cloke, rather than the three years the Cloke family was seeking.

The signing of Tarrant means that the Pies have some insurance up forward, should in fact trade negotiations break down with Cloke.

As the deadline neared the Gold Coast Suns, who had traded prolifically through out the week, were the last team alongside Geelong to get a deal done. The Suns agreed to trade pick 15 for the first round compensation pick they gave Geelong for Gary Ablett.

This pick gives Geelong every opportunity to draft youth into the club with two picks in the first round and six in the top 60 selections.

"From a club point of view being able to obtain a player at pick 15 in this year's draft and put time and resources in him will be beneficial to where we see our list at as opposed to waiting until the pick becomes usable," Geelong football manager Neil Balme said.

In other big moves today, Brisbane's Justin Sherman is headed to the Western Bulldogs who will give the Lions their end of first round compensation pick that they received for Jarrod Harbrow.

Several players who were seeking new homes, including Josh Hill and Andrew Walker, got no joy and will have to remain with their clubs for the time being.

Walker's manager Tom Petroro said his client was happy to stay at Carlton even though he had requested a trade earlier in the week.

"The only way that Andrew was going to go was if Andrew could get to a location he wanted to be at," Walker's mananger Tom Petroro told afl.com.au.

"It wasn't an issue that Andrew had to leave, so he is really happy to stay."

The full list of trades are as follows:

The 2010 AFL trade week has ended in a stalemate with Fremantle and Collingwood unable to come to an agreement on Chris Tarrant's playing future.

Collingwod offered up pick number 55 for the backman with Fremantle requesting a higher pick.

A flurry of late trades on the last day have overshadowed the big winners with the Gold Coast picking up several experienced players whilst being able to keep high draft picks.

In other big moves Justin Sherman is headed to the Western Bulldogs who will give the Lions their end of first round compensation pick that they received for Jarrod Harbrow.
