As Matthew Knights learned at his peril last year, it is one thing to have your team well beaten on a Saturday or a Sunday when not everyone is paying much attention; it is another to be humiliated on a Friday night.
That's two Friday nights on the trot where Adelaide has embarrassed themselves on a Friday night in front of a national TV audience. Last week the Crows surrendered a six-goal lead at home to lose to Essendon. This week it was arguably the worst performance by the club in its 20 years in the AFL.
The Crows kicked just three goals in their 103-point loss to St Kilda. Their 3.6 (24) scoreline is their lowest ever in the AFL, seven points less than the 4.7 they kicked against St Kilda 20 years ago at Moorabbin. It means that in the last six quarters of football, Adelaide has kicked the sum total of five goals.
It was back-to-back Friday night beltings that sealed the fate for Knights at Essendon last year. The Bombers could not sit idly by as the brand was trashed on national TV on prime time in consecutive weeks and it is hard to believe that after what was dished up on Friday night that significant elements within the Crows won't want to do the same.
The debate on Channel Seven was whether Neil Craig will walk at the end of the season. Despite the bluster and his repeated comment about how the club will be better for what it is going through, he would appear one of the more reasonable coaches in the competition, who might know that his time is up and move on accordingly. After all, if he's not the coach of the Crows, as a tenured employee of the club, there will be something else for him to do.
As for the Saints, that's seven wins from nine. Eight goals to Steven Milne and five to Adam Schneider was a great return, while Nick Riewoldt finished with three goals. The skipper remains the wildcard for the Saints, and if he was to come good, then who knows how much damage the Saints could do in September if they get there.
For now, they're in the eight. And they'll stay there for the remainder of the round if the Swans lose to the Bulldogs at the SCG on Saturday afternoon. And in all likelihood, they'll stay in the eight for the rest of the season. Given the tumultuous events of the summer and the awful start to the season, there's quite a story unfolding at St Kilda.
But not like that in Adelaide. The media, the fans and we suspect the powerbrokers, won't tolerate this sort of rubbish for much longer.
