Sorry, but Krakouer's was better

Andrew Walker's skyscraper mark against Essendon was a heck of speccie but it wasn't the best mark of all time - in fact, it wasn't even the best mark of the season.

So says Wayne Carey, in his weekly BPL Vidcast, who rates Andrew Krakouer's effort in round 9 against Adelaide as superior because it was taken in a pack of five or six players, whereas Walker got the perfect ride on the shoulders of Jake Carlisle at the MCG.

''I think Andrew Krakouer's was better - it was taken in his hands, as opposed to on his chest - and he was just as high as Walker,'' Carey says.

''Walker's was a classic ride, a classic AFL mark, don't get me wrong, but it was the sort of mark you'd take out in the backyard with your brother - one knee on either shoulder and you get that perfect ride.

''But Krakouer got just as high, after getting a second lift from the pack, took the ball cleanly in his hands - and he did it in a pack situation - so that's a better mark in my opinion.''

Carey rates Shaun Smith's goalsquare hanger at the Gabba in 1995 as the best of all time.

On the Essendon-Carlton match, Carey says it will be interesting on Brownlow Medal night to see who wins the three votes - Chris Judd for his dominant performance in the midfield, or Eddie Betts for his eight goals from a forward pocket. ''The days when forwards would automatically get three Brownlow votes for kicking eight goals are long gone,'' he says.

The dual premiership captain, who was giving his thoughts only an hour before Adelaide coach Neil Craig decided to resign, said he thought it unlikely the Crows would sack Craig before the end of the season - because of the regard in which he's held at the club. If Craig went, it would be a decision made purely by him.

For the second week, Carey expressed disappointment at Richmond's progress this season, saying their one-goal first-half against Geelong was not good enough.

''Where are Richmond at at the moment?'' he asked. ''We thought they'd improved but they haven't improved one bit - they've probably gone backwards.''

He said the Tigers should take a leaf out of Gold Coast's book. ''You only have to looat the Gold Coast Suns and see the way they continued to take the fight up to Collingwood, and kept taking the game on,'' Carey said. ''For a young side they were fantastic; Richmond take a look at them.

''Right now, if you were asked who you'd like to coach more - out of Adelaide, Richmond, Port Adelaide and Gold Coast - you'd certainly be saying, Gold Coast. There's more upside there.''

The All-Australian captain also touches on the spat between former Essendon coach Matthew Knights and his one-time full-forward Matthew Lloyd, and looks ahead to Round 19 and the key match-ups between Fremantle and Hawthorn, Collingwood and Essendon, and Friday night's North Melbourne v Carlton.
