In his weekly BPL Vidcast, Wayne Carey says Collingwood's bubble of invincibility was burst by Geelong last Friday - and the premiership race is now wide open: "That was a massive hiccup for the Pies.''
Carey says it would be unwise to read too much into Mick Malthouse's relaxed demeanour at three-quarter time and after the match: the Pies' coach would be very worried by what he had just seen.
"Collingwood have got a lot of work to do now. What you see of Mick in front of the cameras is not necessarily what he's thinking. He's a master of deflection and I'd never take Mick Malthouse's public demeanour as a guide to what he's really thinking in private,'' says Carey, a seven-time All-Australian.
Looking ahead to Saturday afternoon's qualifying final against West Coast at the MCG, Carey says the match now shapes as a 50-50 proposition."I think West Coast will be choc-full of confidence after their win and I don't think the MCG holds any fears for them. With their big forwards, and players like LeCras, Embey, Kerr and Cox, I think they have the side to beat Collingwood,'' he says.
"Geelong dismantled them beautifully - they used the ball as well as I've seen them. And the Cats' pressure was fantastic, it was almost Collingwood-like. So they'll go into Friday night's final against Hawthorn really confident.''
The Kangaroos' dual premiership captain touches on a number of other issues, including Nick Maxwell's future, Callan Ward's defection to GWS, Barry Hall's retirement, Adam Goodes' emergence as the greatest individual match-winner in the league - and he gives his tips for all four finals in what appears to be a dream first weekend of September for the AFL.
