A giant step for Carlton

Happiness is listening to the ferals on SEN reacting to the breaking news of Carlton's decision to trade Brendan Fevola.

Fair to say, they're not happy, and hosts Mark Allen and David Schwartz are under the pump and thankful for the seven-second delay.

Those angered by the decision, trotting out the usual "I'll tear up my membership" rubbish fail to get it. Axing Fevola might result in some short-term pain at Visy Park but it is unquestionably in the long-term interests of the club to make Fevola and the myriad of issues that go with him, the problem of another club.

The best example of this is Collingwood. The Pies were robbed of a preliminary final appearance, and perhaps even a grand final berth last year when it suspended Dane Swan and Alan Didak for the remainder of their season as a result of their nocturnal antics.

Fast forward 12 months, and the pair proved to be model citizens. About all Didak did wrong this year was to hardly get a kick in the finals.

Carlton will grow enormously out if this. Kudos to Stephen Kernahan and Greg Swann for finally making the hard call on Fevola after several years of offering "one last chance" to Fevola. For Kernahan, who played at Carlton in the late 1980s with several colourful characters as teammates, it could prove to be the defining moment of his presidency.

The Blues may enter 2009 a bit thin in the forward line, and you'd be licking your lips with anticipation if you were to play Carlton in the first three rounds, with Fevola gone and Chris Judd suspended. Jarrad Waite and Matthew Warnock must get themselves fit and Brad Fisher might just get a reprieve.

Sydney shapes as the best new home for Fevola. Tony Lockett and Peter Everitt both thrived away from the Victorian limelight and matured enormously at a club that famously has zero tolerance for "dickheads".

But you would imagine there would be a fair degree of discussion at the Lexus Centre right now to determine whether Fevola would be a good fit for the Magpies. It could be one of the biggest decisions Eddie McGuire will make during his presidency.
