The NBL's reigning MVP, Corey ‘Homicide' Williams, has arrived in Melbourne and is expected to be officially added to the Melbourne Tigers' roster tomorrow at the expense of import TJ Campbell.
The Tigers, who sit last on the table with a terrible 0-5 record, will have Williams in uniform for this weekend's double, beginning with Friday night's clash against the Perth Wildcats and Sunday's road trip against the Gold Coast Blaze.
Campbell, a first-year import from The University of Portland, struggled in the opening two games of the season, but despite three successive improving performances, including a stand-out game against the Wollongong Hawks in round four when he dropped 21 points and handed out 5 assists, the Tigers could not look past the empty win column and have been forced to make a move.
Campbell was also short-listed in rounds three and four for the NBL Player-of-The-Week award.
In five games, Campbell has averaged 11.8ppg and 2.8apg and has made a team-high 13 three-point field goals while shooting the ball at 46% from behind the arc. But in the last three games Campbell has averaged 16.0ppg.
Williams signed with Greece's EuroLeague side Maroussi BC after the Tigers were unable to secure his signature during the off-season. That was a short stint, however, as EuroLeague officials revoked the team's license to participate in this year's tournament due to financial problems.
Through three seasons with Townsville, Williams averaged 19.5ppg, 4.6rpg and 4.3apg, leading the Crocodiles to back-to-back appearances in the semi-finals in 2009 and 2010.
A meeting of the Tigers board earlier in the week, sealed Campbell's fate and resurrected the NBL career of Williams, although according to sources, Tigers head coach Al Westover pushed for the team to reacquire Julius Hodge, who played 19 games with the Tigers last season.
Williams will suit up for the Tigers against his former team, the Townsville Crocodiles, in Townsville next weekend. The game to be televised live by OneHD.
