(DANIEL EADE is a freelance journalist, basketball nut and BPL contributor.)
It was reported in yesterday's Daily Telegraph that Allen Iverson had tweeted, "I am very happy here in Istanbul, but if I don't return to the NBA I am considering a move to Australia after my two-year contract is up."
"I hear Sydney is a real good city to live in. My boy Rodney asked me to come over. I am comin!"
Iverson, who is currently playing in Turkey with Besiktas alongside Australian AJ Ogilvy, is two months into a two-year deal with his new European team, his first stint after a stellar NBA career that saw him play with the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies.
The thought of Iverson coming Down Under to play in the NBL drummed up excitement, the possibility that the 2001 NBA MVP was so eager to ply his trade with the Sydney Kings grabbed people's attention.
But there was one problem.
Where were the tweets?
On Allen Iverson's twitter feed (@alleniverson) there was nothing about Sydney or the NBL.
Of course the tweets could have been deleted.
But no one had re-tweeted Iverson's tweets, presuming there was two to cover for the 140 maximum spaces allowed per tweet, nor did any news outlet outside Australia pick up the story, and those Australian websites that did, did so after it was in the Daily Telegraph.
Even without the tweets on Iverson's page, other news outlets continued to quote Iverson's tweets.
While the NBL would receive a much needed boost if Iverson ever ventured down to Australia, it seems far fetched that Iverson, who is constantly the face of rumours and innuendo, would bring himself more drama by tweeting about his desire to play somewhere else while he is under contract with another team.
And while the Sydney Kings live off this story and the fanfare associated with Iverson, I wonder if this was just one huge marketing scheme with Iverson used as the unknowing scapegoat.
A low act indeed.
So where are the tweets?
When did Iverson tweet that he wanted to come to Sydney and play in the NBL?
I didn't believe it for a second yesterday, and I still don't believe it today.
