The Melbourne Tigers put together their most impressive performance of the season so far, to comfortably defeat the Adelaide 36ers 87-66, and claim their first back-to-back wins of the season.

The Tigers (4-9), showed no ill effects from a 10-day break or New Years Eve festivities.

It wasn't just the fact that they were triumphant, it was how much of a beat down they gave to the visitors.

The lead blew out to 31 points in the final quarter, and with the Tigers comfortably leading 87-59 with just over two minutes left to play, Tigers head coach Al Westover decided to bring on his reserves. It was only then that the Sixers were able to creep the margin back to 21.

"We needed a win like this," said Corey ‘Homicide' Williams, who finished with his first career triple-double, exploding for 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Tigers continually fed the ball to the 7'2" giant Luke Nevill, who found his way around the basket on his way to 15 first quarter points, finishing the game with 23 points on a perfect 8/8 from the field and 7/7 from the line with five rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

"You don't want to get single-focused on one thing. But our plan of attack was to go at them inside," Westover said.

Nevill's strong opening pushed the Tigers out to a comfortable 25-16 lead at quarter time, but the highlight of the opening period belonged to rookie Lucas Walker who up-faked Sixers big man Daniel Johnson out on the perimeter and flew past him for the emphatic one hand dunk through the lane to a thunderous applause.

A telling point in the first period came with a fraction under three minutes left, when the Tigers stormed up the floor with Williams controlling the ball. Having three options available to him, plus the option to go all the way himself, Williams chose to flick the pass to Eric Devendorf, who up to that point of the game was 0/3 and finding if difficult to get rolling, and Devendorf converted the lay-up plus drew the foul and turned it into a three-point play.

That one play got Devendorf going, the slithering guard ended the night with 21 points.

Westover noted after the game that Devendorf has improved since the arrival of Williams.

"He definitely has (improved). I think a bit of that is with Corey coming in. Corey's a real leader out there whereas TJ (Campbell - axed in favour of Williams) wasn't the real leader. I think he's settled into his position," Westover said.

"I also think that after a few games, he didn't have the start he wanted at the start of the year (season) but I think he was just pushing too hard. I think he's a lot more comfortable with the guys and what we do, and with the league and the refereeing."

Bennie Lewis brought the crowd out to their feet when he catapulted himself up and over Sixers swingman Brad Hill late in the first half. Lewis' crazy slam dunk pushed the Tigers lead into double-figures before a pair of baskets to Devendorf gave the Tigers a 44-30 lead at the long break.

While the Tigers continued to dominate, Daryl Corletto, again proving to be a spark off the bench with 12 points, extended the lead to 64-44 at the final break.

Melbourne then waltzed through the final period to keep their faint playoff dreams alive.

"We're not getting too ahead of ourselves. This was a team we were suppose to beat tonight," said Williams post-game. Williams should be this week's NBL Player of The Week, after achieving a remarkable triple-double.
