An immaculate second-half showcase from Eddie Gill has lifted the visiting Townsville Crocodiles to a nailbiting victory over the Melbourne Tigers, 95-88, in overtime.
After a quiet first half, Gill, the Crocs floor leader, put in a sublime showing after the intermission, finishing with 30 points and 7 assists, to gift wrap a season defining triumph for the Crocodiles. Gill scoring 27 of those points after the long break.
Crocodiles head coach Paul Woolpert paid homage to Gill post-game, acknowledging his performance, "(Eddie) played very well tonight, it was his best game for us."
Tigers head coach Trevor Gleeson described Gill's outing as "sensational".
Gill's effort lifted the Crocodiles' record to 3-2, the first time they have been above .500 all season, and keeps them in the top four for the time being. The Tigers' minor hiccup dropped them to 5-2 on the season.
Gill was not alone is dismantling the Tigers, with Peter Crawford unloading 23 points while Jacob Holmes was solid with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Crocodiles trailed by as much as 11 (43-32 in the 2nd quarter) in the opening half, before Gill drained his first basket, a three-pointer, with one second remaining in the first half to trim the Tigers lead, 43-35, as the teams hit the locker room.
Crawford was the catalyst behind a massive third-quarter run (23-11), which featured back-to-back triples from Gill and consecutive baskets from Todd Blanchfield, before Crawford levelled the scores at 63-63 with 35 seconds left in the third period.
With the Tigers riding a big night from Cameron Tragardh (26 points, 14 rebounds), the team in red took a 66-63 lead into the final period.
Surprisingly the Tigers, who had a gold mine in the post, turned a blind eye to Tragardh when the going got tough and started launching a barrage of outside bombs during the fourth quarter. They finished the fourth quarter with 3/10 from outside the arc.
When he eventually got a touch, Tragardh's first basket in the last period tied the scores up at 76-76, with 4:20 on the clock.
An out-of-control few minutes ended when Gill stopped and propped to sink a 16-footer and give the Crocs an 81-80 lead with 28 seconds on the clock.
But the Tigers regained the lead, Greer putting the home team up 82-81 with nine seconds to play with a basket under pressure from inches away.
With a chance to win in regulation, Gill took the ball to the rack and was fouled, but was only able to make one of two free throws and lock the scores up at 82-82, forcing extra time.
The overtime period belonged to the Crocodiles as Michael Cedar, Gill and Crawford all connected on a triple each to allow the visitors to stomp all over the Tigers when the game was on the line.
Gleeson called the Tigers second half "terrible", as they squandered a double-digit lead and were helpless to halt the Crocodiles onslaught after half-time.
