The Orlando Magic appear resigned to the fact that they are about to lose Dwight Howard forever. Magic general manager Otis Smith acknowledged today that the team will "look at everything".
ESPN reports that the New Jersey Nets are prepared to offer the Magic an enticing deal involving Brooke Lopez and two first-round draft picks in exchange for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu.
With Turkoglu underperforming recently and due to be paid a further $35million over the next three seasons, the trade has some value (through savings) to the Magic, although it will cost them the most dominant centre in the NBA today.
Nets General Manager Billy King was doing his best to hose down the speculation today, saying "I haven't talked to Orlando about a trade ... I don't know where that is coming from."
But King would be insane to not reach out to Smith and put forward a deal of, if not the same, value to the Magic and potentially grab Howard to team him alongside Deron Williams.
The LA Lakers are also a team with interest in acquiring Howard, and can dangle a carrot of Andrew Bynum with other pieces. Pau Gasol? Lamar Odom?
"I think you have to look at everything," said Smith in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel.
Smith's words have opened up an abundance of trade rumours, with the general consensus now appearing to be that the Magic will do the unthinkable: trade Howard.
But with Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets also wanting out, wouldn't the Magic be better off chasing Paul and teaming him with Howard in Orlando, giving the Magic arguably the best point guard in the league alongside the world's best centre?
The Magic will undoubtedly explore this option, offering a package that would involve Jameer Nelson plus more.
If they are rejected, then and only then should the Magic even tinker with the idea of seriously putting Howard out on the market.
Through the opening months of last season, Carmelo Anthony's name was constantly amongst trade speculation and it dragged on for some time.
Now that talk is set to revolve around Howard who will be linked to every team under the sun as innuendo allows every team to believe they may have a realistic chance of landing Superman.
