It's time Andrew Gaze stepped up to the plate and challenged Seamus McPeake for the right to run the Melbourne Tigers.
That change has to be made after McPeake launched into another post-game outburst in the Tigers' lockerroom last Sunday night, this time leading to the axing of import point guard Ayinde Ubaka.
If he truly had the club's interests at heart, McPeake would step down from his position as CEO and majority owner and sell his share of the club.
I would urge Gaze, club legend and seven-time MVP, to seize the day and lead the challenge against McPeake before further damage is done to the Tigers' brand.
In the last twelve months, McPeake has infamously overreacted to a great many things, beginning with the sacking of two-time NBL championship-winning coach Al Westover. Westover was pushed out the door after a lifetime with the Tigers.
Westover and import Eric Devendorf were sacked in early February last year, and since then the Tigers have also parted ways with Darryl McDonald, Corey 'Homicide' Williams and, this year, unforgivably told Daryl Corletto to search for other options so the club could replace him on the roster with Patty Mills.
While Mills is back in the US, via an unsuccessful stint in China, Corletto is now plying his trade successfully with the New Zealand Breakers.
Since the 2009/10 season, the Tigers have constantly searched for a quick fix instead of settling on a well thought-out, medium-term plan to put the team back on track.
The decision to ignore Stephen Hoare during the 2009 off-season, and not bring him back, appears to be the catalyst for the Tigers plummeting down a spiral that has been out of control for many years.
The Tigers have made an abundance of bad tactical calls, from last season's squad that was too tall, to this season's team that is too small, and have lost loyal and long serving players and coaches along the way all in search of that quick fix.
How long can the Tigers, under the leadership of McPeake, continue to go down this path and transform the team into an unattractive destination for players? Do you think anyone is lining up to play for the Tigers in the immediate future?
How long can Gaze sit idly by and allow this to happen without standing up and fighting with every ounce of strength he has to win back the Tigers' reputation and credibility?
It is the club that Gaze lifted to NBL championships in 1993 and 1997, where he earned himself seven MVP awards, and it is now a club that is the epitome of embarrassment for its treatment of players and coaches. The 'family club' is a motto that is laughed at now more than it is honored.
I call on Gaze to do everything in his power to force McPeake out and restore the Tigers name into the upper echelon of Australian basketball.
