Watching day three of the MCG Test was like watching more of the same from Boxing Day. Depressing.

What a dispirited, undisciplined rabble we have representing the baggy green. Not an A-grader amongst them after Ponting and Hussey, who've both turned 35.

The bowling has leaked 500+ runs THREE times to the old enemy ... their batsmen must feel like they're shooting fish in a barrel.

In my opinion it all started to go downhill when Ponting wanted his good mate Damien Martyn recalled for the South African tour in 2006 and Brad Hodge was axed.

Martyn was clearly finished and just played out time .... a disgraceful decision by the selectors.

So how do we fix things?

Well let's start with the ‘dead' rubber in Sydney. The riot act needs to be read to the old fellas. They need to be told this is their farewell match like it was in 2006. If they choose not to take the hint, sack 'em.

For too long, selectors have refused to be ‘career killers' and deprive their old mates of the loss of $500k/year (minimum) in income.

They forgot about the TEAM and argued each individual case. No foresight.

Closer to (my) home, the Melbourne Football Club are to be congratulated for taking the opposite and correct approach.

Loyal servants Cam Bruce and James McDonald (the captain in 2010) were both still in the club's best dozen players but were politely moved on in the offseason as they don't figure in the premiership window in the next five years. Well done, Demons.

Now it might seem that I'm advocating out with the old and in with new but .... the obvious new inclusion is to draft Shane Warne back as captain.

Yeah sure, you all say, what complete poppycock - but it's the right call

Ponting is clearly done as captain but may play a Tendulkar-type role down the order.

There is no clear replacement who can rally the troops and fire them up for the next two years. Not sure Clarke's the answer in the form he's in.

Warne would be a breath of fresh air and rejuvenate the new breed of incoming youngsters who see him as the legend he is!

Warne has made it clear he would be prepared to be drafted into such a role. In fact, I reckon he would to it for free!

Just look what he managed to do in season one of the IPL. The franchise he was given - the Rajasthan Royals - had a ‘Fitzroy' look about its list yet won the whole competition with Warne leading from the front.

What about all the baggage and off field distractions he brings, you ask? Well I say look at Bob Hawke, a scallywag if ever there was one. He managed to re-invent himself to take the Prime Ministership and did a statesman-like job because he respected the high office so much.

For Warne, the Australian captaincy is the holy grail!

I, for one, think he would do a terrific job and clean up his act.

Right now, he is in the papers for all the wrong reasons. This move would restore his reputation to family, friends and all his millions of fans.

Bobby Simpson was drafted out of retirement to captain Australia as a 40-year-old - when we needed him 25 years ago - and he proved a great success even though his input on the field was moderate.

Warne, by contrast, fills the specialist spinner role as an A-grader when only C-graders abound.

Let's bring him back! You know it makes sense.
