We hate to say we told you so, but the revelation that news of Phil Hughes‘ axing from the Australian Test team was first announced through his Twitter account, is just the tip of the iceberg.
We wrote about the changing landscape of sports media a few weeks back. Sporting teams are now controlling their spin and the release of their big news through their websites and increasingly, their Twitter feeds and athletes are now doing the same.
Last month, Kevin Love of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves twittered that coach Kevin McHale had been fired, before the team had released a media statement to that effect.
Also in the NBA, Shaquille O'Neal learned of his trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers via Twitter.
Twitter was also used during the recent WNBA All Star game when Alana Beard of the Washington Mystics and Swin Cash of the Seattle Storm posted messages before during and after the game.
And Stewart Cink's unlikely British Open win was made all the more exciting by the fact he is a serial twitterer and that he updated regularly from Turnberry.
The list of sporting identities with Twitter accounts grows all the time.
Back to Australian sport, where Twitter is just made for sports like cricket. Be it waiting to go out to bat, or as was the case last night, waiting for the outfield to dry, Twitter and bored cricketers are a match made in heaven.
Of course, we'd like to see a few more AFL footballers start tweeting, particularly in time for the Brownlow Medal. Imagine if Gary Ablett twittered. Then we'd know what he was really thinking the last two years as first Jimmy Bartel and then Adam Cooney walked away with the medals that he and many others thought was rightfully his. The anguished looks on his face said plenty. His Twitter feed would have told us a lot more.
