Gerrans, who also suffered a serious facial injury during the cobbles stage last week, finished the mammoth Alpine stage to lie 142nd overall, but Sky's medics have ruled that he cannot safely continue.

The Australian's departure leaves Sky a man short in the mountains, where Gerrans has won grand tour stages before. Only Thomas Lovkvist now seems capable of staying with their team leader and providing support.
