A jaw-dropping win by TWILIGHT SAVINGS (two-year-old filly by Secret Savings - Ghemashah, by Danewin) at Riccarton last Saturday points to Murray Baker preparing another NZ Filly Of The Year.

Baker trains with son Bjorn at Cambridge and their chestnut miss landed her most important win in the Listed Champagne Stakes (1200m) at start number five.

Now winner of three races - each in dashing style - Twilight Savings may well join Baker's other young ladies Kates Myth, Lets Sgor and Staring as the best Kiwi female galloper her generation.

From a seemingly hopeless position, Twilight Savings suddenly had her rivals floundering when a clear ‘go' eventuated.

Sticking with the breed, THANKGODYOU'REHERE (four-year-old gelding by Secret Savings - Winifred's Prayer, by Tierce) was another of this week's memorable winners.

He's also the product of a father and son training team in Pat and Wayne Webster and barrier trial fans had been waiting for the chestnut since a monster barrier trial win.

He sure didn't disappoint! Rodney Quinn still hasn't let the chunky sprinter go after the gelding blazed around Randwick's Kensington 1100m track.

Making it four wins in seven starts, the speedster stamped himself as potential black-type grade.

HARDBREAK HOTEL (three-year-old gelding by Elvstroem - Hard Rider, by Maroof) has been defeated in two city runs for Guy Walter but that's likely to change shortly.

Placed one day at Canterbury, the five-race veteran justified a short quote with his hollow all-the-way Goulburn 1200m win on May 10.

The astute Quinn also trekked down south to guide this fellow and that's no surprise - among the Sydney riding colony, Quinn is considered one of the finest judges of a youngster's potential.

In Victoria, Team Williams unearthed a couple of hot prospects in BRAMPTON (thee-year-old gelding by Pins - Playful Fingers, by Defensive Play) and BASE (three-year-old gelding by Zabeel - Tall Story, by Carnegie).

Brampton had trialled nicely 10 months before his solidly-backed second to Return For Quality over the Bendigo 1400m. Racing out of his grade, he went superbly.

And trainer Robert Hickmott produced Base for a narrow, but convincing Seymour debut win over 1412m last Monday.

Both are way, way better than provincial and country standard.

(In my Five to Follow column of May 6, one of the horses I mentioned, ROCKET TO RIO, ran at Ipswich last Saturday and won Race 9. Another that I wrote about on April 30, START AGAIN, ran at the Gold Coast last Saturday and finished third in Race 2. Three other horses I highlighted in that same column have starts in the next two days: BLACK FIX on Friday May 14 at Scone, Race 8, No.12; BLUEYS WAY on Saturday May 15 at Doomben, Race 6, No.4; and LAKEDRO, on Saturday May 15 at Flemington, Race 8, No.15.)
