Wednesday's Doomben card seemed full to the brim with up-and-coming types and Lee Freedman's PELLIZOTTI (two-year-old colt by Stratum - Red Labelle, by Blevic) immediately set the scene.
Up from three Melbourne defeats, the half-brother to Strawberry Field dominated a 1030m maiden lineup to score brilliantly.
Freedman had previously campaigned this bold goer in Group races and that's where the bay is now headed, both up north and down south.
A filly we've had a wrap on, FAENZA (three-year-old filly by Falbrav - Hathrah, by Zabeel) was rolled for the second time in two starts but that maiden situation should soon change.
Beaten by stablemate Clangor, the strapping filly found 1350m around Doomben a fraction sharp and charting a course nearer the inside wasn't flash.
Clangor and several winners steamed down the middle of the track as the meeting unfolded so Brian Smith's youngster did a fine job. Eagle Farm is her go!
Two Robbie Griffiths-trained winners are now well and truly on the way up - AL JANDAR (two-year-old gelding by Al Samer - Cica Cica Boom, by Canny Lad) and NO DISPUTE (four-year-old gelding by King Of Prussia - No Mystery, by El Qahira).
Griffiths sent Al Jandar out for the first time at Ararat on Monday and he gave his 10 rivals a hiding, pulling up to score by more than four panels.
A big, rangy fellow, he seemed to have another couple of lengths in reserve.
And last Saturday, the same stable had No Dispute score his second victory in seven starts at Bairnsdale.
Not to be denied, he put five lengths on the opposition and the progressive galloper looks capable of eventually measuring up to city midweek standard.
Further afield LONGHUNTER (three-year-old colt by Hailing - Dawnus, by Night Shift) was a stand-out at Leopardstown in Ireland last weekend.
Trained by legendary Irish mentor Kevin Prendergast, the imposing individual is bred for longer distances so, for him to instantly succeed over 1400m, augurs well.
(NO DISPUTE will run on Sunday 6th June at Sale: Race 6, No.9. Of the horses I mentioned in my column of last week, JAN VERMEER will run on Saturday 5th June at Epsom Downs in England in Race 5, while TRANQUILITY ran on Wednesday 2nd June at Belmont and finished second in Race 3.
From my column on 20 May, FAENZA ran on Wednesday 2nd June at Doomben and finished second in Race 4, while FAY FAY ran on Sunday 30th May at Sha Tin in Hong Kong and finished second in Race 1. NEW IMAGE gets a start on Saturday 5th June at Belmont: Race 5, No.11.
From my column on 13 May, HARDBREAK HOTEL will run on Friday 4th June at Hawkesbury: Race 4, No.2, while THANKGODYOU'REHERE will start on Saturday 5th June at Rosehill: Race 7, No.14.)
