There should be no stopping Singapore champion Better Than Ever in the Group 1 Panasonic Kranji Mile (1600m) at the Singapore racecourse this Sunday.
Unbeaten in 10 starts, the Australia-bred four-year-old by French Deputy sounded an ominous warning to his 12 rivals with a sensational trial win on Tuesday.
Under regular rider Saimee Jumaat, Better Than Ever sat off the pace before reeling in the speedy My Son over the final stages, recording a fast time with Saimee sitting still.
Since he started his incredible winning sequence 18 months ago, a trial win five days before he races has been a regular format for Better Than Ever.
Trainer Laurie Laxon said he was delighted after Better Than Ever's final blowout.
"He ran on well in his trial, didn't he? That was the whole point; sit off the pace and let him work home," he said.
Better Than Ever made it 10 wins in a row when he strolled away with the Group 3 Jumbo Jet Trophy (1400m) in August.
Among the beaten brigade were stable mates Waikato (2nd) and Big Maverick (5th), who will be joined by another Laxon heavyweight, Patrons' Bowl winner Intercept.
But Laxon was almost feeling sorry for them.
"Unfortunately that's the way it is. They're all bound to clash from now on," said Laxon.
Michael Freedman's gallant four-year-old Always Certain renews his rivalry with Better Than Ever after coming off second best in four encounters so far.
However, at the latest start, with Better Than Ever at home looking over his stable door, Always Certain turned in a last-to-first victory in the Group 3 Committees prize (1600m), beating the talented Ghozi.
Sunday's Kranji Mile is the first leg of the Singapore Triple Crown Series, and the race is enhanced with the first runner for five-time New Zealand champion trainer Mark Walker, a recent edition to the Kranji training ranks.
Walker will saddle up New Zealand (G1) 2000 Guineas winner Tell A Tale.
While he is expecting a good showing following two nice trials, Walker feels that Tell A Tale will be better in the final two legs of the Triple Crown, the Raffles Cup (1800m), on October 24 and the Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) on November 14.
