Cox Plate to conclude a tragic week

Since Tuesday, there has been much read and heard about the tragic loss of Stathi Katsidis and, from a personal point of view, I would like to thank Stathi for the memories he left us as a top class jockey.

It was my honour to be trackside for two of his biggest career victories and they both occurred this year.

Stathi was brilliant aboard Shoot Out in the AJC Derby at Randwick, producing the big striding horse for Group One glory.

The other was back in January when he steered Military Rose to success in the Magic Millions two-year-old race.

Many other will have a favourite moment of Stathi Katsidis in the saddle; it's just a terrible shame there won't be anymore.

The Cox Plate at Moonee Valley is regarded as the weight-for-age championship of Australasia but if you look at the market, it's going to be a one-act affair. There were many non-racing scribes who were upset that So You Think didn't attend the Moonee Valley Breakfast with the Best on Tuesday but I'm going to trust the Bart Cummings stable.

Obviously it was felt So You Think didn't need to be fired up in front of an excited crowd at the breakfast and, instead, he worked on the course proper at Flemington.

One of my favourite racehorses remarkably will line up in his fourth Cox Plate on Saturday. Zipping is a horse that anyone would love to own but that privilege belongs to Lloyd Williams.

Williams again has plotted a careful path to the Cox Plate and Zipping's victory in the Turnbull Stakes served warning that he's ready to produce again.

Not only is this Zipping's fourth Cox Plate but he's won the past three Sandown Classics.

For the record, Lloyd Williams feels Tuesday's work by Zipping at his Mount Macedon base was perfect for the 2040-metre battle. If you fancy him, he's at $16 with TAB Fixed Odds.

Making it a true Australasian battle this year will be the appearance of multiple Group One New Zealand winner, Wall Street.

Connections had first choice of barrier position and jockey Michael Coleman pushed for the 4, saying Wall Street can settle third or fourth and can produce tactical speed when required.

Coleman and trainer, Jeff Lynds, are aware that Wall Street ($18 with TAB Fixed Odds) has to produce a career best run to have any hope but, at the moment, the pair feel he's at his very best.

If it's not Wall Street giving the New Zealanders something to smile about at the Valley, then it could be Firebolt in the Patinack Farm Crystal Mile.

Trainer Roger James sweated on a start for Firebolt after he watched the horse cope extremely well with the Valley track on Tuesday morning.

James said the three week break since the Epsom has been ideal.

I know I've written about Rekindled Interest quite a bit this spring without joy but here we ago again.

In his final run before the Victoria Derby, Rekindled Interest lines up in the AAMI Vase after he was scratched last Saturday due to the heavy track at Caulfield.

Trainer Jim Conlan told me Tuesday's gallop at Mornington was terrific and he's just hoping Rekindled Interest can get around Moonee Valley

Dwayne Dunn takes over the ride in the Vase and he's one jockey with that hunger for winning.
