Zipping set to dethrone So You Think?

At just his tenth start So You Think claimed his second Cox Plate in emphatic fashion on Saturday and again fuelled debate as to how we rate this up and coming star against past champions of the turf. So You Think has created his own incredible history in the Cox Plate before turning four years old, officially his birthday is next month.

Detractors might claim it wasn't the strongest of Cox Plates in recent years, claims backed up by the 9YO veteran, Zipping running second. However, So You Think served it up to the best middle distance mare in the country, More Joyous, and had her begging for mercy at the 600M mark. What's more, the Bart Cummings wonder-horse ran a quicker last 800M than sprinting sensation Black Caviar earlier in the day.

Superlatives flowed as easily as champagne in the corporate marquees after So You Think's victory, and should he win the Mackinnon Stakes and Melbourne Cup over the next eight days, then he would have to rank alongside Phar Lap and Kingston Town. It would take a mighty effort for a horse that has never run further than 2040M to stretch out to the two mile of the Cup, but with the master trainer putting the polish on this incredible racehorse, anything is possible.

Somewhat overshadowed on the weekend was the incredible performance of Black Caviar whose potential and speed could well see her ranked up with the best sprinters in history by the end of her career. Sadly for racegoers the mere presence of this star Peter Moody trained mare scared away most of the opposition, however to demoralise Sydney's best sprinting mare, Hot Danish by five and a half lengths was an incredible performance.

More impressive about this imposing daughter of Bel Esprit is her jockey, Luke Nolen, continues to claim she is winning on her ear, that each time she returns to the mounting yard there is plenty left in the tank. A scary thought for her rivals.

Black Caviar's next start will be a mouth watering clash with fellow boom sprinter, Hay List in the Patinack Farm Classic on the final day of the Flemington Carnival, and my money will be on the mighty mare continuing her incredible winning streak.

The racing attention now shifts to the VRC as they prepare to host their famous four day carnival week, kicking off this Saturday with the best single race meeting in this country, Victoria Derby Day. Before looking ahead to next weekend there were a number of eye-catching runs that must be highlighted from a brilliant days racing at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Whobegotyou was outstanding in making considerable ground over the final 400M of the Cox Plate. There is little doubt the son of Street Cry is better suited when saved for one final sprint, and he worked to the line every bit like a stayer. There is no confirmed word as to where Whobegotyou will race next, but the Emirates Stakes over 1600M looks an ideal target if there is any petrol left in the tank.

The old boy, Zipping showed great fight in spite of his veteran status as a nine year old and if not for a flat spot between the 600M and 400M marks then he could have finished a lot closer to So You in Think. Zipping raced forty times without cracking a group one success, but has claimed two at his last four starts and he is capable of an upset in this weekend's Mackinnon Stakes if there is any chink in So You Think's armour.

The two three-year old staying features to be run next week, Victoria Derby and VRC Oaks, took shape after the AAMI Vase was run on Saturday. There was no hiding the performance of Rekindled Interest who atoned for two luckless runs with a dominating win over the 2040M.

Punters were quick to install the Jim Conlan trained son of Redoute's Choice a $3.50 favourite for the Derby ahead of Retrieve, who had a mortgage on favouritism after winning the Norman Robinson the previous week. To my eye the 2400M is going to suit Rekindled Interest down to the ground which will make him very hard to topple in this weekend's feature.

Precious Lorraine's slashing performance in the Vase was without a doubt the most eye-catching run of the day. This beautifully bred daughter of Encosta De Lago had beaten five runners home this campaign, however, David Hayes applied the blinkers on Saturday and her form made a dramatic turnaround.

The lone filly in the field, she settled towards the tail of the field but made considerable ground over the concluding stages to finish fourth and looks perfectly suited to the longer journey of next week's VRC Oaks.

Precedence continued a brilliant day for favourite backers with an easy win in the Moonee Valley Cup and will now head to the Lexus Quality this weekend in a last minute attempt to secure a Melbourne Cup birth. However, it was the run of Capecover that really impressed. The ex-New Zealand stayer spotted the leaders an enormous start coming to the final 400M, but motored home over the concluding stages to run third. Not entered for the Melbourne Cup, Capecover looks ideally suited to a race such as the Queens Cup over 2500M on the last day of the carnival.

Sea Galleon was another horse that hit the line with gusto and he continues to knock on the door this campaign. Although somewhat limited in ability, there are plenty of weaker staying races over the next three weeks that will be very winnable for this son of Galileo.

Perth visitor, Delta Gee, showed his first up flop was due to the ill effects of travelling from the West with a promising run in the 1600M Tesio Stakes. I would suggest the mile is her ideal distance and with a second at Flemington behind the smart galloper Response in the Autumn, she will be competitive in any race she contests over the next two weeks.

The Gary Portelli trained Rose Of Peace was having her first Melbourne run on Saturday and was a long way out of her ground coming into the straight but knuckled down to the task and was full of running at the finish. This daughter of Hussonet has the makings of a nice stayer and she is currently entered for the 2000M Wakeful Stakes on the weekend, which would be an ideal step up in distance.

That's Not It took out the 1300 Australia Stakes, but it was the runs of Lone Rock and Happy Trails that really impressed.

Lone Rock struggled to keep up early before racing incredibly ungenerously when the pace slackened and Glen Boss was forced to restrain the filly and pull her out wide. It was an enormous effort by the daughter of Fastnet Rock and she looks set to win another race in the near future.

Paul Beshara has a small team of eight horses in Adelaide but appears to have found a smart one with the talented 3YO gelding, Happy Trails. He spotted the leaders a significant start and looked hopelessly positioned as they rounded the home bend but he responded to Damien Oliver's urgings and steamed down the outside to run the winner to a length. It was a super performance and should be followed with confidence against a similar grade of horse.

All eyes will be on Flemington for the next eleven days as the VRC plays host to arguably the most exciting racing carnival in the world. This morning saw the traditional Breakfast with the Stars and without a doubt the most impressive gallop came from Danny O'Brien's speed machine, Star Witness. Entered for the Coolmore Stakes on Saturday, Star Witness trialled against the brilliant Hay List and was every bit, if not more, impressive. He is definitely a horse to watch this weekend. It is going to be a cracking week of racing and it all beings this Saturday with AAMI Victoria Derby Day, the highest quality race day held anywhere in Australia.
