My tip? 'Caviar' too tasty for Hay List

It's been another incredible week at Flemington and the curtain will come down this Saturday with a fittingly enthralling programme.

Looking back, the entire Spring Carnival has been outstanding. The final day has two Group One races and although the Emirates Stakes traditionally is considered to be the star attraction, this weekend the Emirates may be upstaged by the other Group One, the Patinack Farm Classic for the sprinters.

If you are not excited about Hay List's match up against new turf queen, Black Caviar, perhaps racing is not for you. This is a showdown for the ages.

A little bit like So You Think, the hulking Gosford galloper Hay List has taken the racing world by storm. His record stands at 12 wins from 14 starts and just a placing on Saturday will tip him over the million dollars in prize money.

This campaign he has put together wins in the McEwen, Manikato and Gilgai Stakes. From six starts at 1200-metres he is undefeated.

Hay List put a scare into his camp last week when he sustained some cuts as a result of having jumped up in his stable and thrust his hoof into a water trough.

The injury required five stitches - not exactly what you want a week before a Group One race. However, trainer John McNair has been able to walk and lightly exercise the horse and is confident Hay List will be fit enough for this major test.

Black Caviar only has raced three times this year but all three resulted in stunning wins. She is unbeaten from seven starts and easily may keep that record intact if things go her way in the Patinack.

The brilliant mare has been down the Flemington straight once previously for a win in the Danehill Stakes last year.

Perhaps the only little doubts may be the prospect of a wet track and the engagement of a new jockey because regular rider Luke Nolen is under suspension. Nevertheless I think her class should just carry her through, and she should score a narrow victory in what is shaping as one of the great match races.

Following his Derby Day win, Star Witness looks to be back racing at his best. His value as a stallion must be skyrocketing being a Blue Diamond winning two-year-old and a Group One winning three-year-old, but the colt will have to find another length or two to beat the star duo.

The Patinack will be a brilliant showdown so make sure you are somewhere near a TV (preferrably SKY) on Saturday to witness one of the most highly anticipated clashes of the Spring Carnival.
