The true value of a racecourse drawcard should become patently clear this Saturday when the glamour girl of Australian racing, Black Caviar, displays her indisputable wares at Doomben in the BTC Cup.

It has been suggested that the "house full" sign may have to be displayed when the crowd swells to more than 20,000.

In my memory, this would be a first for Brisbane racing.

Probably the closest to overflow at Doomben was when the great Gunsynd made his farewell appearance during the Labour Day Cup program in 1973.

For Black Caviar's trainer, Peter Moody, there will be considerable satisfaction in his triumphant return to a Brisbane racecourse. The Charleville-bred Moody actually kicked off his fledgling training career in Brisbane after having been a long-time travelling foreman for trainer Bill Mitchell in Sydney.

As they say, it now is history that Moody has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the ranks of trainers in Australia. Last season (2009-10) he shattered the long-time dominance of Lee Freedman and the Hayes family to win the Victorian premiership and this season he has an unbeatable lead of more than 40 over his nearest rival for another premiership crown.

As for the BTC Cup on Saturday, even allowing for the great uncertainty of racing, it is impossible to imagine that Black Caviar would be beaten. Rather fittingly the race is sponsored by the Bundaberg Distilling Co.

Because even if the opposition was permitted a few nips of Bundy before the race, it wouldn't enhance their chances  of halting the progress of the unbeaten brown bombshell.

ON THE question of Bundaberg, it was heartening to hear that racing has been resurrected in the sugar town.

Queensland Racing in March withdrew the licence of the Bundaberg Race Club over concerns of its ongoing viability. However, the spirit of the city emerged with financial support - and the licence to race has been reinstated. Racing is part of the fabric of provincial cities and it has an important social function. It shouldn't be lost.

Bundaberg may not be one of the major racing cities of Queensland but it has some rich memories. The 1962 Doomben 10,000 winner, Red Smoke, did his early racing on the tight-turning sand track as did a subsequent Doomben International Stakes winner, Brother Mac.

The next Bundy race meeting is on July 9 for the Bundaberg Gold Cup and Lightning Handicap. I hope it is a bumper day.

(By the way, I should point out I was Bundaberg-bred and once called the races in Bundaberg during my cadet days on the Bundaberg News-Mail.)

SCONE, in the hub of the Hunter Valley, has two great days of racing on Friday and Saturday.

The Scone Guineas on Saturday may further enhance the reputation of rising star Sincero.

While racing enthusiasts often are guilty of premature exclamations and Sincero has been the centre of sky high predictions, there seems to be a solid foundation of high expectations.

His win in the Gosford Guineas, on a rain affected track, was outstanding. Provided he retains his current devastating racing style he looks destined to make his mark on the Brisbane winter carnival.

ANOTHER feature of the standalone Saturday at Scone is the Dark Jewel Stakes, which has been a pretty handy race in the past.

In a competitive affair, I am having something on the Hawkes-trained Pontiana. A promising filly she performed well enough last start when just out of the placings and from a favourable alley may get a good run in this 1400 metre test.
