Hopes high for odds-on So You Think

The first day's results at Royal Ascot have only enhanced the chances of So You Think becoming the most dominant horse in Europe in the next few months.

The now Irish-based So You Think is at almost unbackable odds in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (2000m) and even his connections at Coolmore Stud in Ireland are not sure what to expect.

They are well aware they have a super talent on their hands and it should be simply a matter of course that he makes it three out of three since joining the Aidan O'Brien stable late last year.

Yet, racing does not always work within such exact perimeters and until So You Think is over the line, they are not getting too far ahead of themselves.

Although the Danny O'Brien-trained Star Witness was beaten into second place in yesterday's King Stand Stakes (1000m) , it was a run full of merit and he is now likely to back up in Saturday's Golden Jubilee Stakes (1200m), the second of the three British legs in the Global Sprint Challenge.

Star Witness ‘'fizzed up'' before the race and had no favors in the run but still looked the winner in the final 100 metres until local hope Prohibit burst through the pack down the middle of the track to snatch victory by a half length.

Jockey Steven Arnold said he had nothing to carry him into the race after a tardy getaway and he felt there was still a lot of improvement in the horse.

The Hong Kong-trained Sweet Sanette held on gamely for third after setting a sizzling pace. O'Brien said it had always been intended to give Star Witness two runs in England and the Golden Jubilee was now on the cards rather than the July Cup at Newmarket.

The new British superstar, Frankel, maintained his unbeaten record in the St James's Palace Stakes (1600m) despite what could only be described as a daring ride by Tom Queally.

With stablemate Rerouted acting as pacemaker and setting up a long lead in the middle stages, Frankel was travelling kindly back in the small field until Queally decided to make his move 1000 metres from home and was left in front a long way out.

With the crowd of almost 50,000 roaring him on, Frankel looked vulnerable inside the 200 metres but managed to gain his seventh victory by three quarters of a length with Queally later saying it had shown Frankel ''is more versatile than we think'' although the punters who had laid the long odds-on might have expected a more circumspect riding performance.

The 300th Ascot carnival opened with the champion French mare Goldikova, attempting for her 14th Group One success, having to settle for second place behind Canford Cliffs in the Queen Anne Stakes (1600m).

The Richard Hannon-trained Canford Cliffs is a rare talent in his own right having now won feature races at Royal Ascot three years in a row starting with the Coventry Stakes as a two-year-old in 2009 and the St.James's Palace Stakes last year.
