Australia's Ascot hopes dwindle

As the saying goes, it never rains but it pours, and as well as the real thing at Royal Ascot today it also applies to the dwindling chances of an Australian horse flying the flag at the 300th anniversary of the world's most famous race meeting.

After the defeats of Star Witness and So You Think, the Peter Moody-trained Hinchinbrooke became the hope of the side - only to be ruled out of Saturday's Golden Jubilee Stakes after straining a suspensory ligament.

Moody wrote on Twitter today that if it was decided to retire Hinchinbrooke he would stand at the Yaraman Park Stud in NSW next season.

Star Witness could still come to the rescue in the Golden Jubilee although trainer Danny O'Brien will want to see the rain clouds blow away tomorrow.

O'Brien is pleased with the way Star Witness came through the King's Stand Stakes on Tuesday and the field of 17 in the Golden Jubilee (1200m) is without the King's Stand winner, Prohibit.

Meanwhile, Aidan O'Brien had a reversal of fortunate after the shock defeat of So You Think on Wednesday with the win of the heavily backed Fame And Glory in the Ascot Gold Cup (4000m).

It was O'Brien's fifth win in the gruelling staying test with Fame And Glory following the four wins by his former champion stayer Yeats whose feats were honoured earlier in the week by the Queen unveiling a statue of the horse in the parade ring at Ascot.

Ridden by Jamie Spencer, Fame And Glory (11/8 fav) had three lengths to spare over Godolphin's Opinion Poll (16/1) with French stayer Brigantin (16/1) four lengths away third.

It was Fame And Glory's fifth win at Group One level and the five-year-old by Montjeu is rapidly carving out a career in his own right.

O'Brien believes Fame And Glory is a far more versatile stayer than Yeats and a race like the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) would be well within his scope.

The Luca Cumani-trained Manighar, who ran in last year's Melbourne Cup, finished fourth and he could be a visitor to Melbourne again this spring.
