Was Tyson 'The Greatest'?

At the peak of his career, and on the back of retaining the IBF (International Boxing Federation), WBA (World Boxing Association) and WBC (World Boxing Council) belts, Mike Tyson was an unstoppable fighting machine who had racked up an undefeated 35-0 opening to his boxing career.

It was late June in 1988 and Tyson had just defeated, the previously unbeaten, Michael Spinks (31-1) in the first round of a boxing contest that had lasted just 91 seconds.

At this point of his career, was Tyson the greatest athlete/sports star of all-time?

Tyson's domination of his opponents was masterful, he had 11 KO's and 20 TKO's (plus four wins by unanimous decision), and was a human wrecking ball as he sent men down to the canvas time and time again.

Tyson would win his first 37 fights, before he was finally taken out by Buster Douglas in February of 1990.

'Iron Mike', as he was known, was a force. His boxing skills, both when being aggressive and when being defensive, were sublime, and with his ability to win so often and so convincingly, Tyson became the biggest sports star on the planet.

The question I ask, all BackPageLead readers, is this; If you judge and rank athletes according to how great they were when they were at their prime, is Mike Tyson the greatest of all-time?

A very strong case could be made for basketballer Michael Jordan, who in 1996 led the Chicago Bulls to an NBA record 72 wins, an NBA championship, and won the MVP and Finals MVP.

Muhammad Ali? Tiger Woods? Don Bradman? Wayne Gretzky?

Who do you think?
