Aussies invade college football

After the LSU punter boomed a kick deep inside Oregon territory, I heard Brent Musburger say something about "the young man from Mel-born, Australia." Doing a double take, I quickly fired up Google and discovered that indeed, Brad Wing from Melbourne, was the punter for LSU. Wing, who's father David briefly played for the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe, spent a year at a high school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was spotted by LSU coaches. Now he's punting for one of the best teams in American college football.

Last Sunday was an extraordinary day for Australian athletes in American college football. Not only was Wing punting for LSU, but in the game that followed on ESPN, the University of Hawai'i had an Aussie punter - Alex Dunnachie - and an Aussie punt returner, former Brisbane Lion and Port Adelaide player Scott Harding. Dunnachie has been solid as the Warriors' punter for the past two seasons, but Harding has been a revelation. Despite having never played American football, he's won the starting job as punt returner, a high-risk position that requires good hands, sound judgment and courage.

Add to that, the fact that Tom Hornesy at Memphis is one of college football's best punters and Jesse Williams, a massive defensive lineman from Queensland, is getting some playing time for Alabama - a team many think will win the national championship - and this could be a banner year for Aussies at US colleges.

Week Two TV Guide

Saturday Sep 10, 12:30 pm, ESPN 2, Missouri @ Arizona State

Why watch: To see watch Arizona State's wonderfully named Vontaze Burfict. He's one of the country's best linebackers, but also a hothead who racks up personal foul penalties.

The scoop: Many think this is a make-or-break year for the Dennis Erickson era at ASU. The high-paid veteran coach has not been able to get the Sun Devils into national contention. Missouri lost just three games last season and if the Tigers can replace star quarterback Blaine Gabbert (his brother Tyler is one of the candidates) they could equal or even better that.

Fun fact: Arizona State's mascot, Sparky, has undergone a makeover to make him less comical and more intimidating. His devil's pitchfork is now more like a trident-esque and the school's new slogan is (I kid you not) "fear the fork."

Sunday Sep 11, 2 am, ESPN 2, Oregon State @ Wisconsin

Why watch: It's the Beavers against the Badgers!

The scoop: Wisconsin showed off a powerful running game and new QB Russell Wilson in an easy win over UNLV last week. Now Oregon State comes to town and the Beavers are already in crisis. OSU was stunned by lowly Sacramento State last week and coach Mike Riley took some additional heat for allowing a player he'd suspended for assaulting his girlfriend to suit up and play.

Fun fact: Between the third and fourth quarters, Wisconsin's student body goes nuts and dances to the House of Pain song "Jump Around."

Sunday Sep 11, 5:30 am, ESPN 2, Alabama @ Penn State

Why watch: #54 Jesse Williams, the Queenslander who plays defensive line for Alabama.

The scoop: Rarely does Alabama travel outside of the South for non-SEC games. The Crimson Tide is one of the nation's best teams and this is an early test, although most feel Penn State's lack of an impact player at quarterback will hurt them. It's the 46th season at Penn State for 84 year old head coach Joe Paterno.

Fun fact: Uniform-wise, this is the "anti-Oregon Bowl," and features two of the plainest uniforms in college football.

Sunday Sep 11, 9 am, ESPN 2, BYU @ Texas

Why watch: Week 2 of BYU's "take over the world tour."

The scoop: As mentioned last week, BYU is playing an independent schedule, meaning they aren't part of any conference. After a win over Mississippi last week, the Cougars travel deep into the heart of Texas to play the Longhorns. Texas is coming off its worst season in years and still has to solve its quarterbacking issues. Second year man Garrett Gilbert struggled mightily in 2010.

Fun fact: This is the first meeting between the two teams since 1988.

Sunday Sep 4, 10 am, ESPN, Notre Dame @ Michigan

Why watch: A matchup of two of the biggest football programs in the Midwest, although both have fallen on hard times.

The scoop: Notre Dame opened its season with a lightning-delayed defeat at home to South Florida. Head coach Brian Kelly was seen by TV cameras berating player after player. Clearly the Irish are in a bit of strife, and a loss here would have major implications. Michigan, under new coach Brady Hoke, is trying to rebuild after the disastrous Rich Rodriguez era. Exciting quarterback Denard Robinson is back, and led the Wolverines to an easy win over Western Michigan last week.

Fun fact: Michigan's unique "winged" helmet design dates back to 1938.
