Aloha Scott Harding

This Saturday, why not forego the traditional barbecue in favour of a Hawai'ian luau? Put a pig on a spit, mix up a few mai tais and say "aloha" to former AFL player Scott Harding, who has made the improbable jump from Aussie Rules to American football. I say improbable because Harding - unlike many other Australians in American football - is not punting. He's returning kicks and catching passes.

You'll be able to see Harding, who played for the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide, whenever Hawai'i's opponent - in this case San Jose State - punts or kicks off. Catching a sky-high punt is a difficult skill to master, especially when defenders are bearing down on you with intent to injure. But Harding's years in the AFL have prepared him well and when you watch him, it looks as if he's been doing it for years.

Harding seems to be settling well in Honolulu and is learning from two highly-respected veteran coaches. His special teams coach is former Hawai'i head coach Dick Tomey, age 73, who also coached at Arizona, San Jose State and in the NFL with the 49ers. The receivers coach at Hawai'i is Mouse Davis, age 79 - one of the most innovative coaches in history - who perfected the wide-open "run and shoot" offense when he was head coach at Portland State.

The Hawai'i/San Jose State game is live at midday on Saturday on ESPN.

Week Seven TV Guide

Sat Oct 15, midday, ESPN, Hawai'i (3-2) @ San Jose State (2-4)

Why watch: Scott Harding of course.

The scoop: Hawai'i will rely on the arm of quarterback Bryant Moniz as it goes for a third straight win. This is a WAC conference game, so it's an important one for the Warriors who have title aspirations. San Jose has played well despite its 2-4 record. They battled hard in a 29-16 loss to BYU last week and prior to that, recorded back-to-back wins for the first time in years. That said, the Spartans will be hard pressed to stop Hawai'i's up-tempo offense.

Fun fact: Alex Dunnachie, from Melbourne's Marcellin College, is the Warriors' punter.

Sunday Oct 16, 6:30 am, ESPN 2, Oklahoma State (5-0) @ Texas (4-1)

Why watch: To see if Texas can slow the amazing OSU offense.

The scoop: Oklahoma State is averaging 51 points and 577 yards per game. Former pro baseball player Brandon Weedon leads the offense which put up 33 points on Texas last year. The Longhorns committed five turnovers last week in a 55-17 humiliation at the hands of Oklahoma. This could be another blowout if Texas isn't careful.

Fun fact: The two teams have played 25 times since 1916. Oklahoma State has only won three of those games.

Sunday Oct 16, 9 am, ESPN, Alabama (6-0) @ Mississippi (2-3)

Why watch: To see if Alabama can keep its unbeaten streak alive.

The scoop: This is as Southern a matchup as you can get. The two schools first played each other in 1894, which for you non-history majors means it was about 30 years after the end of the Civil War. Expect a lot of running from both teams. Bama has Trent Richardson, currently fifth in the country in rushing yards. Richardson is going for a sixth consecutive 100 yard plus game, and if he gets there, he'll equal the school record set by former Seattle Seahawk Shaun Alexander. Mississippi has switched quarterbacks, with Randall Mackey in charge now, and he's given the Rebels a bit of a spark.

Fun fact: This is a battle of two schools equally known for their nicknames: Bama and Ole Miss.

Sunday Oct 16, 9:30 am, ESPN 2, Florida (4-2) @ Auburn (4-2)

Why watch: To see which traditional power will fall to 4-3 and be labeled a "disappointment."

The scoop: Both these powerhouse programs are coming off big losses. Auburn was thumped by Arkansas, while Florida was embarrassed by LSU a week after losing to Alabama. The winner of this game can still make it to a decent bowl, but the loser is going to struggle to remain relevant. To make matters worse, both coaches are dealing with quarterback issues. Florida's talented John Brantley was injured in the Bama game, as was his backup Jeff Driskel, while Auburn starter Barrett Trotter has thrown six interceptions in six games.

Fun fact: For the first time since 1982, no Florida school is ranked in the Top 25.

Sunday Oct 16, 1:15 pm, ESPN 2, Arizona State (5-1) @ Oregon (4-1)

Why watch: This could be a preview of the Pac 12 championship game.

The scoop: Oregon has to figure out how to adjust to life without LaMichael James. The Heisman Trophy candidate - and the best runner in football - dislocated his elbow last week and won't play against the Sun Devils. How well the rest of Oregon's offense can pick up the slack will be a key to this game. Arizona State has finally hit its straps under veteran coach Dennis Erickson and is a legitimate contender for the conference title. 6'8" quarterback Brock Osweiler - the tallest QB in NCAA football - leads the Sun Devils.

Fun fact: Oregon has been the leader in the football fashion stakes, but Arizona State has undergone a similar Nike makeover this season.
