BPL's Power Rankings: breaking the tie

This week, we're inspired by the recent A-League Grand Final going to penalties and the NFL owners voting to change the league's playoff overtime policy.  It got us thinking about the various ways big-time sports settle drawn contests.

01 Baseball's "Extra Innings"

Pure and simple.  If the game's tied after nine innings, you just keep playing until someone wins.  All rules stay the same, with the home team getting the final chance to bat.

02 Basketball's "Five Minute Overtime"

The game is extended by five minutes, with no rule changes.  If it's still tied, you do it again.

03 AFL's "Five Minutes Each Way"

Only happens in the Finals, but like basketball, it's pretty straightforward.

04 Ice Hockey's "Four-on-Four Sudden Death"

Each team is reduced from five skaters to four, which opens up the ice and makes things more exciting.

05 College Football's "Kansas Plan"

Named after the US state where it was originally designed, this overtime gives each team the ball with a series of downs, and keeps the integrity of the game relatively intact.

06 Soccer's "Extra Time and Penalties"

Non-soccer fans tend to hate the penalty kicks concept, often comparing it to deciding a basketball game with free throws.  In reality, the problem is the extra 30 minutes, with teams rarely taking chances, and usually opting to roll the dice in the shootout.

07 NRL's "Golden Point"

Can be a tad anti-climatic when a tight, physical game of rugby league is decided by a one-point drop kick.

08 Rugby Union's "Ten Minutes Each Way"

Only used in knockout competitions, so it isn't seen that often.  It's fair, although if the match is still tied after 20 minutes, there are a variety of ways to settle things, including awarding the win to the team that's scored the most tries.

09 NFL's "Sudden Death"

This unfair format, in which one team can win the coin flip, get the ball and kick a winning field goal without the other team even touching the ball, has been changed for the playoffs, but at this stage, remains for the regular season.

10 Twenty 20's "Bowl Out"

Definitely dramatic, but how can you take a game that's all about the batsmen and then turn it over to the bowlers?
