Such was the collective shock, even the vuvuzelas fell silent for the briefest of moments. Spain, the clear tournament favourites, had been supposed to swat Switzerland away with the minimum of fuss and maximum of style. But, on 52 minutes, Gelson Fernandes scored what might prove to be the most unexpected and unlikely goal of the tournament.
