Despite all the hype, all the optimism and all the sheer excitement surrounding the newest A-League franchise, it was one of the league's stalwarts who denied them the grand opening. Although it was dour and gritty, it was just what was required in a cold Melbourne evening.
Tactically, the Mariners were superb under their new coach Graham Arnold. Knowing that Josip Skoko was a key playmaker in the Heart side, Arnold employed the services of Matt Simon and John Hutchinson to frustrate the former Socceroo. Skoko wasn't allowed any space and this no doubt contributed to the Central Coast victory.
The Melbourne crowd was up and about and their team dominated for large periods in the second half. Fortunately, the Mariners managed to weather the storm, largely due to some of the intelligent substitutions from the new boss. Early in the second half, Adam Kwasnik was substituted for Rostyn Griffiths as Central Coast looked to put numbers behind the ball.
In my previous blog, I stated the need for more enterprising and expansive football from the Mariners. We probably got the opposite in this game but only the harshest of Mariners fans could criticise this. To put it plainly and simply, Central Coast did what was required. We must not forget that this a new look Central Coast outfit and exciting interplay and crisp passing will not happen overnight.
With the men from Gosford expected to improve as the season progresses, I might need to change my earlier prediction. I stated that the Mariners would fight it out for a late position in the finals, now I believe they can challenge for the greatest prize of them all. It's all shaping up for an exciting season for the Central Coast supporters.
