After a grinding 1-0 victory over the A-League's newest franchise, the Mariners will look ahead to a huge clash against Adelaide United on Sunday afternoon. Central Coast will be able to play in front of their home fans for the first time during this campaign and will certainly welcome the support after a tough encounter in Melbourne last week.
After a disappointing performance in round one, Adelaide will be looking to bounce back and record their first win of the season. In their round one clash, the Newcastle Jets dominated for large periods but were unable to make it count, the match ending in a stalemate.
Incredibly it was the Mariners who were the only side to conjure a win in the first weekend of the new A-League season. However, Adelaide have been somewhat of a bogey side for the Mariners by taking the points on one occasion last season, the other two games ending in draws. Adelaide's largest road win since the inception of the A-League actually happened at Bluetongue Stadium back in 2007, the match finished 3-1.
The most impressive aspect of Central Coast's first win of the season was the organisation down back. New signing Patrick Zwaanswijk appeared to fit right in at the heart of the Mariners defence where he partnered club stalwart and Captain Alex Wilkinson. The new defensive pairing will have to be on their game if they are to stop new Adelaide signing Sergio Van Dijk.
It will be interesting to see whether the 10-day gap will affect the home side in a positive or negative manner. After a lengthy preseason, the boys will be itching to take the field and go for their second win. A large break such as this could slow down some of the team's momentum... But let's hope not!
As usual the selection table will bring about great interest, especially with new signing Patricio Perez a chance to overcome an injury setback and line up for the first time. New goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan copped a slight knock in the season opener, however, he is expected to line up in goal. Fortunately there were no serious injuries after last Thursday's bruising encounter, with the majority of players up for selection.
With the Marinators able to get their first look at the new squad and the new coach, Sunday's game shapes as an exciting clash in Gosford.
