It seems I may have underestimated Adelaide United last weekend. The pace of Matthew Leckie and Iain Ramsay right through the heart of the defence exposed a lack of speed at the back; Colosimo and Beauchamp were constantly caught flat footed and Adelaide were able to score three goals for the first time since Round 4 last season .
The season is only three rounds old, yet as the points continue to slip away from the Heart doubts begin to surface about the squad that has been assembled. Is Gerald Sibon the ideal man up front for a side who love getting the ball to feet but seem reluctant to make runs in behind to space to receive the ball? Despite their doubtless ability, is the lack of pace between the central defence pairing a serious issue? When you look at the young Australian strikers and wingers coming through, the aforementioned Leckie and Ramsay, Marko Jesic, David Williams and even the young Kiwi prodigy Kosta Barbarouses, they all have speed to burn, and we may just continue to be exposed by pace at the back. It's too early to make a call on the state of the squad, but until the side translates beautiful football into beautiful results we will continue to ask questions.
But there is one undeniable positive which emanated from last Friday night's result; we scored, TWICE!! Rutger Worm, despite his obvious shortcomings when on the ball, produced a headed finish that would have drawn plaudits in any league across the globe. And Eli Babalj, the young man with a huge future, coolly finished off a move which he had kicked off, although much of the credit has to go to Matt Thompson's brilliant run down the left. The future of Australian football was on show Friday night, and if Matthew Leckie plays out the season in the A-League I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one scratching my head, the boy's a star, and let's hope he gets a crack in the national team sooner rather than later.
When will the elusive first win come for the Melbourne Heart? Possibly not from our next two ‘home' games at AAMI Park; no home wins yet this season between the two Melbourne sides suggests the visiting teams are enjoying the manicured surface more than the respective Melbourne boys.
But Nick, I hear you asking, what changes can the team make to grab their first three points? I'm glad you asked, and I think I might have the solution. Melbourne Heart have looked exceedingly more comfortable when chasing the result, so why not play that way from the start! With Beauchamp out, Adam Hamill will come in at the back to partner Simon, with Marrone and Heffernan pushing forward at every opportunity, even if it means disregarding their defensive responsibilities. Kalmar and Shroj will anchor the midfield, serving as cover for the two wing-backs in the process. But the biggest change I would make would be to start two men at the front, Sibon and Worm, with Hoffman and Matty Thompson working down the flanks. There may be a few goals in the against column, but with a mentality to go out and score more than their opponent the Heart will acquire the results the fans are dying for!
And to all A-League fans, hopefully Sunday will be the day we witness the return of Michael Baird after a stint in Romania where he scored goals for fun. He will be a star in the A-League once he gains clearance; any team that can maintain a clean sheet against the Glory this season deserves the title right then and there! GO HEART!
