Another week, another win, and another stunning contender for goal of the season to Marcos Flores.
The Reds juggernaut continues as Saturday's 2-1 win over Newcastle, their fourth in a row, places them a game clear on top spot. United would have secured a clean sheet if not for an errant Cassio back pass that gifted Sean Rooney a late consolation for the Jets. However, this was one of the only blights on a strong performance after young sensation Matthew Leckie put Adelaide ahead with a powerful header in the first half and Flores sealed it with a second half stunner. After slipping past three defenders, Flores calmly put the ball in the top corner with his opposite foot and will surely be in the running for goal of the season come the end of the season.
Yet this is the least of Adelaide's worries as it has been revealed several key players, including the explosive Leckie and captain Travis Dodd, are in danger of being signed by other clubs in the January transfer window. Leckie, Dodd, Fabian Barbiero and the crafty Cassio are only some of a total 11 players that could be courted by other clubs, especially after the extremely impressive start to the season. The fact that these players, who will be uncontracted at season's end, are yet to sign on is somewhat worrying for new coach Rini Coolen. However, the Dutchman believes six rounds does not make a season, and they won't be rushed into any deal until they are sure who they want to keep.
The best way for Coolen to keep these players is to keep winning. On field success is a proven formula to maintaining a playing roster. While most United fans will be biting their finger nails until Leckie puts pen to paper, a move to Europe (which is looking inevitable with recent form) is not on the cards for at least another couple of years. As for Dodd, he has been the cornerstone of Adelaide United since day one and it would take a betting man to tip him to leave Hindmarsh Stadium. As a (considerable) side note, Sergio van Dijk and Flores have both signed multiple year contracts as United fans all heave a collective sigh of relief.
The fact that this issue has been raised is a compliment to the Reds team and coaching staff. If other clubs are interested in Adelaide's players it is a testament to their good recent performances. So sit back and relax Reds fans, enjoy the lovely football your team is playing and off-field issues should take care of themselves.
