In compiling a list of my best 100 soccer players in the world this year, I based my selections mainly on stats, but also on overall quality ... and personal opinion.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the two best players of 2011, in my opinion, and very hard to split. Ronaldo scored an amazing 40 goals in 2010-11 to Messi's 31. However, Messi almost doubled his assist tally. This season, they have been very similar in both categories. Messi's La Liga trophy, Champions League goals and success put him ahead of Ronaldo.

It was also difficult to separate Xavi and Iniesta. Those midfield maestros are the centre of every Barcelona attack. Xavi passes to Iniesta, Iniesta to Xavi, Xavi to Iniesta, Iniesta to Xavi, Xavi to Messi, GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! Villa changed his game to complement Messi and he's been superb. Pique was instrumental in denying opposition goals.

Mario Gomez scored a huge number of goals after a poor 2010. Robin van Persie has had an amazing season at Arsenal but still had niggling injuries in 2010-11. Gomez was just ahead of him for his goals in the Champions League. I put Sergio Aguero ahead of Wayne Rooney because he's had a more consistent year.

Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria both had superb seasons and were two of the top assist getters in 2011. Having Rafael Van Der Vaart and Thomas Mueller ahead of Cesc Fabregas is probably a big surprise, but the stats show they had much better seasons. Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben were low after being among the best players last year.

Antonio Di Natale is a much underrated player. He has been a prolific goalscorer for the past few seasons. I put him ahead of Edison Cavani who has had injury troubles in 2011 - 12. Iker Casillas is ahead of Manuel Neuer as the premier goalkeeper. I feel Ashley Cole is overrated and I put him lower than Philipp Lahm and Dani Alves, the other top full backs.

Javier Pastore is a top young player and he has been on fire for PSG after a superb season in Italy. He was higher than Gareth Bale who has been inconsistent. Sanchez, Hazard, Gotze, Hamsik and Kagawa followed as developing youngsters. Sanchez moved to Barca but has struggled for game time. Hazard is possibly the best, but is playing in the French league which is not as good as the German, Italian, English or Spanish leagues.

Didier Drogba, Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Fernando Torres are all strikers that have struggled to find the net in 2011. Drogba has been slightly more consistent than the others, but has had lots of injuries. Berbatov and Tevez were great in 2010 - 11, but have barely played in 2011 - 12. Torres has been awful, but the goals should come soon. Kaka has also hardly played because of the emergence from Ozil and Di Maria.

Javier Hernandez was great in 2010-11 but hasn't played much in 2011-12. Giuseppe Rossi and Hulk have been more consistent over the two seasons. Charlie Adam and Luka Modric are both important for their respective clubs without grabbing the headlines. Diego Forlan had an amazing World Cup in 2010 but the goals have really dried up in 2011. Alexandre Pato was the most promising young striker a few years ago but hasn't really broken through because of injuries.

Jack Wilshere and Neymar are two of the best young players in the world, but are low for different reasons. Wilshere hasn't played at all for Arsenal this season and is still only 19. Neymar has been scoring goals for fun, but only in Brazil. He needs to play in Europe to prove himself. Dries Mertens, Christian Eriksen and Seydou Doumbia all have superb stats but play in the weaker leagues of Europe.

Anyway, here it is: my list of the top 100 players this year.
