Derek Jeter's signing with the Yankees is a reminder of what the pilot sometimes says over the intercom after he has landed the plane: the safest part of your day is now over.
Now it gets complicated, as Jeter heads toward 37 next June 26. The Yankees have committed to a three-year contact, three years somewhere near $16 million per year, making him the highest-paid shortstop for the moment.
Undoubtedly Jeter will remain in great physical condition and his head and heart will be as admirable as ever and fans can expect him to dive into the seats forehead first and make remarkable defensive plays on some hapless latter-day Jeremy Giambi, or some new exploit.
