THEY did not bump one another. They did not shove, there was the occasional intemperate word and a percolating discontent but in the end it was about the tennis and about Lleyton Hewitt fighting the type of epic five-set match that has marked his career only to be eliminated by his career foe David Nalbandian early this morning.
Despite having two match points Hewitt could not hold on to write another chapter in a storied tennis history, going down to Nalbandian 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 9-7 in nearly five hours.
It was an enthralling contest that reprised many of the finest matches of Hewitt's career: emotional, combative, gritty and with twist after unexpected twist. And, of course, it went the five sets. Unlike many others of this ilk in Hewitt's career it ended poorly, just after 1am today.
