WHETHER Roger Federer classified it as first-week rust or a rude awakening, he was given a fright last night.
Federer was shaken, stirred and taken on a wild ride before eventually defeating dogged Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-2 6-3 4-6 4-6 6-3 in another marathon at Rod Laver Arena.
No one, least of all Federer, was surprised by the audacious challenge because Simon took a 2-0 head-to-head advantage into his second-round mission. It took Federer 3hr 13min to start squaring the ledger.
