BERNARD Tomic is the last man standing, but he's only a boy. Lleyton Hewitt's demise has left the Australian Open, and Tennis Australia, with only one card to play among Aussie men, in the form an 18-year-old wildcard.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal aside, Tomic is the male most likely to fill centre court and keep eyes trained on television sets. He is also the only young Australian on the scene seemingly capable of becoming a slam contender and anchor of Davis Cup teams, though Jason Kubler has his admirers. The conflict between giving the public and player what they want, and what a kid needs to develop his game - and keeping his dad sweet - are among the raft of tricky Tomic issues for Tennis Australia, which, to date, has defused a few Tomic bombs before detonation.
