Yet as the A.F.C. championship game against Pittsburgh approached, the Jets went atypically silent. When they did talk, they lobbed compliments at the Steelers instead of insults. Perhaps they chose the wrong approach.
The same week the Jets ended their steady stream of trash talk, their season ended, too. It ended on Sunday at Heinz Field, where yellow towels twirled, where black-and-gold confetti fluttered in the air, where the Steelers booked a trip to Super Bowl XLV with a 24-19 triumph.
