THE Melbourne Rebels tomorrow are expected to formalise what most rugby followers mistakenly believe has already happened and confirm Stirling Mortlock as captain.
From the moment it was announced last March that Mortlock would be leaving the Brumbies and moving to Melbourne on a three-year contract, it was assumed the former Wallabies captain would be the man to lead the Rebels into their debut season of Super Rugby.
But it was never quite that cut and dried where the Rebels management was concerned. Mortlock is 33 and has a long history of injury. Indeed, he missed both Brumbies Super 12 title wins, in 2001 and 2004, because of injury and lost the Wallabies captaincy in 2009 after badly damaging his knee in the Cape Town Test against the Springboks.
