This generous slice of football treachery — which has been all the AFL's doing — haunted the competition last year as the Gold Coast compiled its historic first list. It will do so for two years where GWS is concerned because the new Sydney club has been given access to two straight seasons of uncontracted talent.
"I have no desire to interfere in speculation about who is going where," Demetriou told The Age yesterday. "I hope Tom Scully stays at his club because everybody wants good young players to stay with their club.
"Having said that, it is incumbent upon the club who's got the good player to keep their good players."
Demetriou went on to play down the salary-cap advantages of GWS, as he did the potential marketing dollars Scully could command. After all, said the AFL boss, Scully in the western suburbs of Sydney was no Israel Folau.
