ST GEORGE Illawarra faces an almost impossible battle to retain Wayne Bennett past this season after Brisbane last night sacked coach Ivan Henjak in a move that could be seen as clearing the decks for the master coach to return.
Henjak is understood to have lost the support of his players including captain Darren Lockyer. His position has been filled by assistant coach Anthony Griffin just three weeks before the start of the NRL season.
"It has been decided at board level that a change needed to be made in this regard, and that change will be made effective immediately," Broncos chief executive Paul White said last night.
