AUSTRALIA has improved its international performance in the past year but is still losing ground against the major competing nations in the race to the London Olympics, according to the Australian Olympic Committee's annual benchmark survey.
The survey maps the performance of all leading nations in benchmark world events in Olympic sport over the past year and confirms Australia's slide out of the top five, which began at the Beijing Olympics.
Based on last year's study, Australia has dropped to eighth among nations, down from seventh in 2009, despite earning 42 medals, an improvement on 2009's tally of 39, which was a 12-year low.
