Casey has reached the finals the last two years, and was one of the heavy favorites coming in this year. But the 23-year-old Day, making his first Accenture Match Play debut, played near-flawless golf in upsetting the Englishman.
For Casey, the loss marks the first time since 2006 that he has not advanced to at least the third round. In terms of match flow, Day produced a string of pars midway through the front nine while Casey stumbled with bogeys at the fourth (when he went bunker-to-bunker) and the seventh (when his approach shot sailed into native area past the green).
Now 2 up, Day put the hammer down.
