INTERNATIONAL Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has warned that mafia and other criminal elements are involved in match-fixing and illegal betting in world sport.
Speaking on the eve of the first IOC-sponsored conference on illegal betting in sport, the IOC president said illegal betting on sport was one way of laundering money generated by organised crime. He said world sport needed to be much more vigilant in fighting the threat of match-fixing which was being undertaken by organised crime in connection with illegal betting.
"Match-fixing is the end result of illegal betting," he told a press conference before today's meeting at IOC headquarters in Lausanne. "If it were only illegal betting, without match manipulation, you would say it is still something we have to fight for the ethics and for money laundering.
