Within five points of a famous upset victory with only 12 minutes to play, the Rebels finished as they started - unconvincingly.
Auckland skipper Keven Mealamu acclaimed the Rebels as "team that wanted to play" after they rocked the fourth-placed Blues with a steely mid-match revival.But his opposite number Stirling Mortlock lamented Melbourne's costly penchant for shoddy defence and poor handling.
"We were in the game for 40-50 minutes, but we've got to getter better at our systems especially in defence," he said.
Bearing out Mortlock's observations were Auckland's six tries, earning the hosts a bonus point. Overall, it was a vastly improved performance from the Rebels - but still riddled with terminal inconsistency.
