The AFL has sold its broadcast rights for the 2012-16 seasons for more than $1 billion to pay-TV operators Foxtel and Austar and Seven Network, with Telstra securing live streaming rights for all games for its mobiles and tablets.
The total value of the deal with the range of networks is $1.253 billion, above most expectations ahead of the announcement.
The amount far exceeds the $780 million the AFL secured when it last negotiated with the television networks over the 2007 to 2011 seasons, and includes a $1.18 billion cash component.
