Sympathy for Nick, kudos for Coasters

In his weekly BPL Vidcast, Wayne Carey says he feels sorry for St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt who is trying his hardest to lift the struggling Saints but to no avail. ''You can see just how hard he's trying, as captain of that side, to get them over the line each week, and how hard he's working - so I do feel terribly sorry for him,'' Carey said.

While the Saints are in freefall down the ladder, Carey said the team coming the other way and are now entrenched in the top eight - West Coast - are playing with fantastic spirit. He nominated their key forwards, the team's pressure on the opposition and the work of assistant coaches such as David Teague (appointed this year) and Scott Burns (who started in 2009) as being pivotal to the Eagles' rejuvenation.

The fact they were able to lose Daniel Kerr and Andrew Embley in the warm-up before last week's game against Fremantle, and still win, was testament to their new-found character.

And, in reviewing last Friday night's blockbuster between Geelong and Collingwood, Carey said the Cats were deserved winners - in spite of the controversy over Scott Pendlebury's disallowed late goal - and said other teams would have closely watched Geelong's tactics, and taken heart from their win.
