Bought by Rafa Benitez as a replacement for Xabi Alonso, Aquilani never fitted in at Anfield. He was injured when Liverpool bought him and it took him an age to recover. When he finally did, he needn't have bothered. It became clear that the anticipation surrounding his debut had hardly been worth it as he looked out of form and off the pace.
